Course Overview
The Dangerous Goods Transportation course from the American Institute of Safety Professionals provides comprehensive training on the regulatory requirements for transporting hazardous materials by road (DOT 49 CFR), air (IATA Dangerous Goods Regulations), and sea (IMDG Code). The safe transportation of dangerous goods protects transport workers, emergency responders, and the public from the chemical, physical, and biological hazards that improperly packaged, labelled, or documented shipments create. Regulatory non-compliance can result in fines exceeding $500,000 per violation, criminal prosecution, and catastrophic incidents.
The curriculum covers the UN classification system (nine classes with divisions), proper shipping names and UN numbers, packaging requirements (UN-approved packaging, performance levels, packing groups), marking and labelling (package marks, hazard labels, handling marks), shipping documentation (DOT shipping papers, IATA Shipper's Declaration, IMDG Dangerous Goods Declaration), vehicle placarding (DOT), loading and segregation requirements, emergency response information, training requirements for each function (shipper, carrier, handler), and the regulatory differences between road, air, and sea transport. All training is delivered 100% online through the American Institute of Safety Professionals LMS.
Learning Outcomes
Upon completing this program, participants will be able to:
- Classify dangerous goods using the UN system: nine classes (explosives, gases, flammable liquids, flammable solids, oxidisers, toxic/infectious, radioactive, corrosive, miscellaneous), divisions within classes, packing groups (I/II/III severity), and the classification that drives every subsequent requirement.
- Select and mark UN-approved packaging: performance levels (X, Y, Z corresponding to packing groups), packaging specifications, closure, quantity limits, and the packaging that prevents release during transport.
- Apply marking and labelling: proper shipping name, UN number, hazard labels (matching class), handling marks (orientation arrows, limited quantity, environmentally hazardous), and the visual communication that identifies hazards on every package.
- Complete shipping documentation: DOT shipping papers (description, quantity, emergency contact), IATA Shipper's Declaration for air, IMDG Declaration for sea, and the documentation that accompanies every dangerous goods shipment.
- Apply vehicle placarding (DOT): which placards are required based on quantity and hazard class, placard placement, and the placard-based identification system for transport vehicles.
