Course Overview
The Foundations of Safety Leadership course from the American Institute of Safety Professionals provides introductory-level training on the leadership behaviours and communication skills that create safety culture. This is the entry-level leadership course for new supervisors, team leaders, and workers preparing for supervisory roles who need foundational leadership competency before advancing to the comprehensive Safety Leadership and Supervision course. It teaches the basics: what visible leadership looks like, how to communicate safety effectively, how leading by example influences team behaviour, how to engage workers in safety, how to recognise safe behaviour, and the basic accountability concepts that new leaders need on Day 1.
The curriculum covers safety leadership versus safety management, visible felt leadership (being present, observing, engaging), leading by example (personal compliance, attitude, consistency), basic safety communication (pre-task briefings, toolbox talks, one-on-one conversations), worker engagement fundamentals (asking rather than telling, listening, involving), positive recognition (timely, specific, sincere), basic accountability (setting expectations, following up, addressing non-compliance constructively), and the leadership self-assessment that helps new leaders identify their development priorities. All training is delivered 100 percent online through Microsoft Teams and the American Institute of Safety Professionals LMS. Upon completion, graduates receive a certificate, wallet card, and transcript, employer-verifiable at amiosp.com/student-verifications.
Learning Outcomes
Upon completing this program, participants will be able to:
- Demonstrate visible safety leadership: being physically present on the work floor, observing work practices, engaging workers in safety conversations, and the presence that demonstrates safety matters to leadership.
- Lead by example: personal compliance with all safety rules (PPE, procedures, housekeeping), positive attitude toward safety, consistency between words and actions, and the modelling that influences team behaviour more than any policy.
- Communicate safety effectively: conducting pre-task safety briefings, leading engaging toolbox talks, having constructive one-on-one safety conversations, and the communication skills that build trust and openness.
- Engage workers in safety: asking workers about hazards they see, listening to concerns, involving workers in solutions, and the participative approach that creates ownership rather than passive compliance.
- Recognise safe behaviour: timely (immediately after observing), specific (naming exactly what was done well), sincere (genuine appreciation), and the positive reinforcement that sustains safe behaviour.
- Apply basic accountability: setting clear safety expectations, following up to verify compliance, addressing non-compliance constructively (coaching before discipline), and the fair, consistent approach that builds respect.

Frequently Asked Questions (FAQs)
This training program is intended to provide entry-level general industry workers information about their rights, employer responsibilities, and how to file a complaint as well as how to identify, abate, avoid and prevent job related hazards on a job site. The training covers a variety of general industry safety and health hazards which a worker may encounter at a work site. Training should emphasize hazard identification, avoidance, control and prevention, not OSHA standards.
