Course Overview
The Housekeeping Safety course from the American Institute of Safety Professionals provides dedicated training on the workplace housekeeping practices that prevent slips, trips, and falls — the #1 cause of workplace injuries across all industries. Poor housekeeping is the most common and most preventable root cause of workplace injuries: cluttered aisles, wet floors, loose cords, improperly stored materials, inadequate lighting, and accumulated waste create the conditions for injuries that simple housekeeping discipline would prevent.
The curriculum covers housekeeping as a safety system (not just cleaning), slip/trip/fall prevention through surface management, material storage and organisation (5S awareness: Sort, Set in Order, Shine, Standardise, Sustain), spill prevention and response, cord and hose management, aisle and egress clearance maintenance, waste management and disposal, tool and equipment storage, lighting adequacy, housekeeping inspection programmes, and the housekeeping culture that sustains clean, organised, safe work environments. All training is delivered 100% online through the American Institute of Safety Professionals LMS. Upon completion, graduates receive a certificate, wallet card, and transcript, employer-verifiable at amiosp.com/student-verifications.
Learning Outcomes
Upon completing this program, participants will be able to:
- Implement slip prevention: maintaining dry walking surfaces, immediate spill cleanup, wet floor signage, drainage management, proper floor cleaning methods, and anti-slip treatments.
- Implement trip prevention: cord and hose management (routing, covers, elevation), eliminating floor-level obstructions, maintaining level surfaces, repairing damaged flooring, and adequate lighting.
- Manage material storage safely: designated storage areas, height limits, weight distribution, rack organisation, FIFO rotation, and the storage discipline that prevents falling objects and obstructed egress.
- Apply 5S methodology awareness: Sort (remove unnecessary items), Set in Order (designated locations), Shine (clean and inspect), Standardise (consistent practices), Sustain (maintain discipline).
- Manage waste effectively: proper waste containers, regular collection schedules, segregation (recyclable, hazardous, general), and the waste management that eliminates accumulation hazards.
- Maintain aisle and egress clearance: keeping aisles clear for pedestrian and vehicle traffic, maintaining access to emergency equipment (extinguishers, electrical panels, exits), and the clearance that enables safe evacuation.
