Course Overview
The Safety and Health Program course from the American Institute of Safety Professionals provides comprehensive training on designing, implementing, and sustaining an effective workplace safety and health programme using OSHA’s Recommended Practices for Safety and Health Programs as the framework. A safety and health programme is the organised approach to managing workplace safety: it integrates all safety activities (hazard identification, training, inspections, investigations, emergency preparedness) into a coherent system with management leadership, worker participation, and continuous improvement at its foundation.
The curriculum covers the seven core elements of OSHA’s Recommended Practices (management leadership, worker participation, hazard identification and assessment, hazard prevention and control, education and training, programme evaluation and improvement, communication and coordination for multi-employer worksites), programme development methodology, policy and goal setting, resource allocation, role and responsibility assignment, performance measurement, programme auditing, management review, and the continuous improvement cycle that matures the programme over time. All training is delivered 100 percent online through Microsoft Teams and the American Institute of Safety Professionals LMS. Upon completion, graduates receive a certificate, wallet card, and transcript, employer-verifiable at amiosp.com/student-verifications.
Learning Outcomes
Upon completing this program, participants will be able to:
- Design safety and health programmes using OSHA’s seven core elements: management leadership (commitment, policy, accountability, resources), worker participation (involvement in all programme elements), hazard identification (inspections, JHA, incident review), hazard prevention (hierarchy of controls), education/training, programme evaluation, and communication.
- Develop safety policies and goals: policy statements that communicate management commitment, measurable safety goals (lagging and leading), and the documentation that establishes programme direction.
- Assign roles and responsibilities: management accountability, supervisor duties, worker responsibilities, safety committee functions, and the organisational structure that ensures every safety function has an owner.
- Implement programme evaluation: internal auditing, performance measurement (TRIR, DART, leading indicators), worker perception surveys, and the evaluation that identifies improvement opportunities.
