Course Overview
Learning Outcomes
Upon completing this program, participants will be able to:
- Prepare scaffold foundations: assess ground bearing capacity, install mudsills, set base plates, verify levelness, and ensure drainage — the foundation that supports the entire structure.
- Follow the progressive erection sequence: build frame by frame, install bracing at each lift before ascending, install platforms before moving to the next level, and the disciplined sequence that keeps erectors safe on an incomplete structure.
- Install bracing correctly: cross-bracing, horizontal bracing, and building tie-ins at required intervals to prevent sway, displacement, and collapse.
- Install platforms to Subpart L specifications: minimum width (20” supported), maximum gap (≤1”), overhang limits (6–12”), secured to prevent displacement, and scaffold-grade or manufactured decking.
- Protect yourself during erection: when guardrails are not yet in place, erectors must use alternative fall protection (PFAS, safety nets, or other protection) as the structure progresses upward.
- Dismantle scaffolds safely: reverse the erection sequence (top down), remove platforms before bracing, maintain structural integrity throughout dismantling, prevent components from falling, and the controlled dismantling that prevents collapse.
Core Curriculum Topics

- Bracing and Tie-Ins: cross-bracing, horizontal, building ties, intervals, connection methods
- Platform Installation: planking, decking, gaps, overhang, securing, load rating
- Guardrail Installation: top rail, mid-rail, toe boards, end protection
- Access Installation: ladders, stairway towers, hook-on ladders
- Fall Protection During Erection: PFAS, safety nets, alternative protection when guardrails absent
- Dismantling: reverse sequence, top-down, structural integrity, falling component prevention

Frequently Asked Questions (FAQs)
This training program is intended to provide entry-level general industry workers information about their rights, employer responsibilities, and how to file a complaint as well as how to identify, abate, avoid and prevent job related hazards on a job site. The training covers a variety of general industry safety and health hazards which a worker may encounter at a work site. Training should emphasize hazard identification, avoidance, control and prevention, not OSHA standards.
