Course Overview
The Scaffolding Erector Safety course from the American Institute of Safety Professionals provides specialist training for scaffold erectors — the workers who build and dismantle scaffolding systems. Scaffold erection is one of the most hazardous construction activities because erectors work at progressively increasing heights on an incomplete structure: no guardrails exist until the erector installs them, platforms are incomplete until the erector places them, and bracing is absent until the erector connects it. Erectors must protect themselves while building the structure that will eventually protect others.
The curriculum covers erection safety planning, foundation preparation (ground assessment, mudsills, base plates, levelness), the progressive erection sequence (frame by frame, with bracing at each lift, platforms before ascending, fall protection throughout), component identification and assembly, bracing installation and tie-in requirements, platform installation (planking, decking, securing), guardrail installation, access installation, fall protection during erection (when guardrails do not yet exist), safe dismantling (reverse sequence, platform-by-platform, never stripping bracing before removing platforms above), and the coordination between erection teams, competent persons, and site management. All training is delivered 100 percent online through Microsoft Teams and the American Institute of Safety Professionals LMS.
Upon completion, graduates receive a certificate, wallet card, and transcript, employer-verifiable at amiosp.com/student-verifications.
Learning Outcomes

Upon completing this program, participants will be able to:

  • Prepare scaffold foundations: assess ground bearing capacity, install mudsills, set base plates, verify levelness, and ensure drainage — the foundation that supports the entire structure.
  • Follow the progressive erection sequence: build frame by frame, install bracing at each lift before ascending, install platforms before moving to the next level, and the disciplined sequence that keeps erectors safe on an incomplete structure.
  • Install bracing correctly: cross-bracing, horizontal bracing, and building tie-ins at required intervals to prevent sway, displacement, and collapse.
  • Install platforms to Subpart L specifications: minimum width (20” supported), maximum gap (≤1”), overhang limits (6–12”), secured to prevent displacement, and scaffold-grade or manufactured decking.
  • Protect yourself during erection: when guardrails are not yet in place, erectors must use alternative fall protection (PFAS, safety nets, or other protection) as the structure progresses upward.
  • Dismantle scaffolds safely: reverse the erection sequence (top down), remove platforms before bracing, maintain structural integrity throughout dismantling, prevent components from falling, and the controlled dismantling that prevents collapse.

Core Curriculum Topics

  • Erection Safety Planning: scope, sequence, fall protection plan, competent person oversight
  • Foundation Preparation: ground assessment, mudsills, base plates, levelness, drainage
  • Progressive Erection Sequence: frame-by-frame, bracing at each lift, platforms before ascending
  • Component Identification: frames, cross-braces, base plates, screw jacks, planks, guardrails
  • Bracing and Tie-Ins: cross-bracing, horizontal, building ties, intervals, connection methods
  • Platform Installation: planking, decking, gaps, overhang, securing, load rating
  • Guardrail Installation: top rail, mid-rail, toe boards, end protection
  • Access Installation: ladders, stairway towers, hook-on ladders
  • Fall Protection During Erection: PFAS, safety nets, alternative protection when guardrails absent
  • Dismantling: reverse sequence, top-down, structural integrity, falling component prevention
  • Team Coordination: erection crews, competent persons, site management communication
Mode of Delivery
Participants will receive online training through Microsoft Teams and LMS. Courses are offered by accredited broadcasters and backed by expert instruction and official study materials. All assessments are conducted online and successful participants are awarded certificates that are accepted internationally.
Course Content
The Scaffolding Erector Safety program is designed to train employees, contractors, and site workers in safe scaffolding erection, alteration, and dismantling practices. This course emphasizes hazard identification, proper use of tools and equipment, and compliance with workplace safety standards to prevent accidents and injuries while working at height.

Core Modules
Participants will learn essential techniques and safety measures for scaffolding operations:
  • Roles and Responsibilities of Scaffolding Erectors
  • Types of Scaffolds and Components: Tube, Coupler, Mobile, and Suspended
  • Scaffold Erection, Alteration, and Dismantling Procedures
  • Use of Personal Protective Equipment (PPE) and Fall Protection
  • Hazard Identification and Risk Control Measures at Heights
  • Safe Handling of Tools, Materials, and Load Management
  • Inspection and Maintenance of Scaffold Components
  • Communication, Signaling, and Team Coordination on Site
Optional / Site-Specific Modules
Additional modules may be included based on site-specific scaffolding operations and risk levels:
  • Working Around Electrical Hazards and Overhead Services
  • Scaffold Access, Egress, and Safe Work Platforms
  • Permit-to-Work Compliance and Site Safety Rules
  • Emergency Response and Rescue Procedures for Heights
The Scaffolding Erector Safety program equips participants to safely erect, maintain, and dismantle scaffolds, minimize risks while working at heights, and ensure compliance with workplace safety regulations to protect themselves and their colleagues.
Entry Requirements
  • No prior training required
  • No academic degree required
  • All instruction in English; working proficiency required

Upon completion, graduates receive an American Institute of Safety Professionals certificate, wallet card, and transcript. Employer-verifiable at amiosp.com/student-verifications.

Program Duration
The program is designed to offer flexible online learning with a minimum instructional contact time of 8 hours. Most learners successfully complete the course within one month, allowing them to progress at their own pace while balancing professional commitments.
Examination
Candidates can take this exam through an assigned portal from the American Institute of Safety Professionals. A passing score is 70% or higher, and exam results are provided right after by email to the address provided. The exam is open-book, allowing candidates to validate their answers. Any candidates who do not pass have 1 month after their exam to go through the training materials and can take the exam 3 additional times.

What You Will Get

Why Choose American Institute of Safety Professionals's Qualifications

  • Erector-Specific, Not User-Specific: designed for the workers who BUILD scaffolds, not those who USE them. Different hazards (working on incomplete structures), different fall protection challenges, different skills.
  • Progressive Erection Discipline: the systematic sequence that keeps erectors safe on an incomplete structure: bracing at each lift, platforms before ascending, fall protection throughout.
  • Dismantling Safety: dedicated content on the reverse sequence that prevents the dismantling errors that cause scaffold collapse.
  • 100% Online, Flexible, Recognised Across 42 Countries: employer-verifiable at amiosp.com/student-verifications.

    Frequently Asked Questions (FAQs)
Q: How is this different from Scaffold Safety?
A: Scaffold Safety is for users who work ON completed scaffolds. This course is for erectors who BUILD scaffolds. Erectors face unique hazards: working on incomplete structures without guardrails, progressive assembly at height, and dismantling in reverse.
Q: What will I receive upon completion?
A: Graduates receive an American Institute of Safety Professionals certificate, professional wallet card, and official transcript. Employer-verifiable at amiosp.com/student-verifications.

This training program is intended to provide entry-level general industry workers information about their rights, employer responsibilities, and how to file a complaint as well as how to identify, abate, avoid and prevent job related hazards on a job site. The training covers a variety of general industry safety and health hazards which a worker may encounter at a work site. Training should emphasize hazard identification, avoidance, control and prevention, not OSHA standards.
