Course Overview
The Well Site Completion and Servicing Safety course from the American Institute of Safety Professionals is the companion to the Well Site Preparation and Drilling Safety course, covering the hazards and safe work practices specific to well completion operations and well servicing (workover) operations. While drilling creates the wellbore, completion transforms it into a producing well, and servicing maintains and repairs it throughout its productive life. These post-drilling phases introduce hazards that drilling does not: perforating with shaped charges (explosives on a wellsite), hydraulic fracturing at extreme pressures (5,000 to 15,000+ psi), flowback of hydrocarbons and produced water, well testing with live hydrocarbons, acidizing with corrosive chemicals, and workover operations that re-enter producing wells containing pressurised hydrocarbons and potentially H2S.
Completion and servicing operations are statistically more hazardous than drilling on a per-exposure basis because they involve higher pressures, live hydrocarbons, explosive materials, and corrosive chemicals in combination. A perforation gun misfire, a high-pressure treating line failure during fracking, an uncontrolled flowback event, or an H2S release during a sour-well workover can kill multiple workers in seconds. This course develops the safety awareness that every person on a completion or workover location needs: the specific hazards of each operation, the control measures that prevent incidents, and the emergency response actions that save lives when controls fail.
The curriculum covers completion operations safety (casing, cementing, perforating, hydraulic fracturing, gravel packing, well testing, production tubing installation, wellhead and christmas tree installation), well servicing (workover) safety (workover rig operations, wireline, slickline, coiled tubing, acidizing, artificial lift installation, well abandonment), high-pressure system management (pressure testing, treating iron, hose management, bleed-down, pressure containment), flowback and well testing hazards (uncontrolled flow, sand erosion, produced water, flaring), chemical safety (fracturing fluids, acids, biocides, corrosion inhibitors, scale inhibitors), H2S in completion and servicing (sour well intervention), and the emergency response procedures for high-pressure release, H2S, fire, and well control events during completion and servicing.
All training is delivered 100 percent online through Microsoft Teams and the American Institute of Safety Professionals Learning Management System (LMS). Upon successful completion, graduates receive an American Institute of Safety Professionals certificate, professional wallet card, and official transcript, all employer-verifiable at amiosp.com/student-verifications.

Upon completing this program, participants will be able to:
- Identify completion operation hazards by phase: casing and cementing (suspended loads, high-pressure cement pumping), perforating (shaped charges, misfire procedures, exclusion zones, gun arming/disarming), hydraulic fracturing (extreme pressure, treating iron integrity, chemical exposure, proppant handling), well testing (live hydrocarbons, flaring, separator operation), and production equipment installation (wellhead, christmas tree, flowline connection).
- Manage perforating operations safely: explosives handling and transport regulations, gun assembly and arming procedures, perforation zone exclusion, misfire protocols, surface and downhole perforating differences, and the explosive safety procedures that prevent detonation incidents during handling.
- Manage hydraulic fracturing (stimulation) safety: high-pressure treating iron inspection (hammer unions, treating lines, manifold), pressure testing before pumping, chemical handling and mixing (fracturing fluids, crosslinkers, breakers, biocides), proppant (sand) handling and dust control, wellhead isolation tool integrity, and the simultaneous operations (SIMOPS) coordination when fracking occurs alongside other well activities.
- Manage flowback and well testing safety: controlling initial flow after perforation or stimulation, separator operation, sand management (erosion, accumulation), produced water handling, flare operation, H2S monitoring during flowback, and the well control measures that prevent uncontrolled flow events.
- Identify well servicing (workover) hazards: workover rig operations (similar to drilling rig but on producing wells with pressure), wireline operations (wire tension, pressure control equipment, radioactive source handling for logging), coiled tubing operations (high-pressure, tubing fatigue, snubbing), and the re-entry hazards unique to producing wells.
- Manage acidizing operations safely: acid types (HCl, HF, organic acids), chemical burn prevention, PPE for acid handling, acid mixing and pumping, neutralisation, and the environmental controls that prevent acid release.
- Manage high-pressure systems: pressure testing procedures (hydrotest, function test), treating iron inspection (hammer union damage, thread wear, corrosion), hose and line management (restraint, whip checks, routing away from personnel), bleed-down procedures, and the pressure containment discipline that prevents high-pressure release injuries.
- Apply H2S safety during completion and servicing: sour well identification, H2S monitoring during flowback and workover, breathing apparatus requirements, safe briefing area designation, and the elevated H2S risk during well intervention compared to drilling (producing formations may contain higher H2S concentrations than drilling mud controlled).
- Manage chemical safety: identifying the chemicals used in completion and servicing (fracturing fluids, acids, biocides, corrosion inhibitors, scale inhibitors, methanol, glycol), SDS management, PPE selection, mixing and handling procedures, spill containment, and the environmental protection that prevents chemical release.
- Execute emergency response for completion and servicing events: high-pressure line failure response, well control during completion (snubbing, killing the well), H2S release, chemical spill, fire (including flare incidents), and the emergency procedures specific to completion and servicing operations.
