Course Overview
The Bloodborne Pathogens course provided by the American Institute of Safety Professionals helps the healthcare workforce to identify and protect themselves from occupational exposures to blood and other potentially infectious materials (OPIM) as mandated by OSHA §1910.1030. The course will describe critical definitions including blood, bloodborne pathogen, contaminated sharp, engineering controls, occupational exposure, and personal protective equipment (PPE). Importance of decontamination procedures, handwashing facilities, and a needleless systems to safeguard against potential infectious microorganisms will be taught as infection control measures against Hepatitis B Virus (HBV) and Human Immunodeficiency Virus (HIV). Training will facilitate legal exposure incident identification and its risk assessment and judicial response procedures to take including vaccination, post exposure evaluations, and follow ups by legal healthcare providers. Each participant will understand how to integrate the engineering control and work practices combined with the use of PPE to achieve compliance.
This healthcare program will ensure occupational exposure will be avoided, and reinforce a culture of safety within the healthcare organization.

Mode of Delivery
Participants will receive online training through Microsoft Teams and LMS. Courses are offered by accredited broadcasters and backed by expert instruction and official study materials. All assessments are conducted online and successful participants are awarded certificates that are accepted internationally.

- Understanding Bloodborne Pathogens: Properties and characteristics of bloodborne pathogens, the health effects of bloodborne pathogens exposure, OSHA regulations regarding bloodborne pathogens exposure
- Hazard Identification and Risk Assessment: Techniques for identifying and assessing bloodborne pathogens hazards in healthcare environments, evaluation of the potential consequences of bloodborne pathogens exposure
- Control Measures: Engineering controls to reduce bloodborne pathogens exposure, work practices to reduce bloodborne pathogens exposure, personal Protective Equipment (PPE) and its proper use
- Training and Communication: Importance of safety training for workers on bloodborne pathogens hazards, communication of bloodborne pathogens safety policies and procedures, employee engagement and feedback
- Compliance and Recordkeeping: Compliance with OSHA and other regulatory bodies, safety audits and inspections, Record-keeping and reporting requirements
- Exposure Control Plan:Development of an Exposure Control Plan (ECP), Review and update of ECP annually, implementation of the ECP
- Standard Precautions: Understanding Standard Precautions and its application in healthcare setting, proper hand hygiene and use of personal protective equipment, proper disposal of sharps and contaminated waste
- Emergency Preparedness and Response: Identification and management of emergency situations related to bloodborne pathogens exposure, emergency response procedures and emergency response teams, first aid and emergency medical services
Entry Requirements
This program follows global workplace health and safety standards, and is taught by industry experts. Successful students receive an American Institute of Safety Professionals accredited certificate which is recognized by several employers and regulatory bodies.
Graduates receive a master certificate, course completion certificate (if applicable), an official transcript, a wallet card, and access to a professional safety network which promotes ongoing learning and career growth.
Program Duration
The program is designed to offer flexible online learning with a minimum instructional contact time of 8 hours. Most learners successfully complete the course within one month, allowing them to progress at their own pace while balancing professional commitments.
Examination
Candidates can take this exam through an assigned portal from the American Institute of Safety Professionals. A passing score is 70% or higher, and exam results are provided right after by email to the address provided.
The exam is open-book, allowing candidates to validate their answers. Any candidates who do not pass have 1 month after their exam to go through the training materials and can take the exam 3 additional times.
