Course Overview
The Bloodborne Pathogens in the Workplace course from the American Institute of Safety Professionals provides comprehensive training on OSHA 29 CFR 1910.1030, the standard that protects workers from occupational exposure to blood and other potentially infectious materials (OPIM) that can transmit bloodborne diseases including hepatitis B (HBV), hepatitis C (HCV), and human immunodeficiency virus (HIV). While the standard was created primarily for healthcare workers, bloodborne pathogen exposure can occur in any workplace: first aid responders, janitorial staff cleaning blood spills, law enforcement, corrections, laboratory workers, tattoo artists, and any employee who may encounter blood or OPIM in the course of their work.
The standard requires employers to develop a written Exposure Control Plan (ECP), implement universal precautions (treating all blood and OPIM as infectious), use engineering controls (sharps containers, self-sheathing needles, needleless systems), provide PPE (gloves, gowns, face shields, eye protection), offer hepatitis B vaccination at no cost to employees with occupational exposure, establish post-exposure evaluation and follow-up procedures, and provide annual training.
The curriculum covers bloodborne pathogen identification (HBV, HCV, HIV — transmission routes, survival outside the body, disease progression), the exposure determination (which job classifications have occupational exposure), exposure control plan development, universal/standard precautions, engineering controls for sharps injury prevention, work practice controls, PPE selection and use, HBV vaccination programme, post-exposure procedures (exposure incident reporting, source individual testing, exposed employee evaluation, prophylaxis), decontamination (surfaces, laundry, regulated waste), sharps injury log, labels and signs, and annual training requirements. All training is delivered 100 percent online through Microsoft Teams and the American Institute of Safety Professionals LMS. Upon completion, graduates receive a certificate, wallet card, and transcript, employer-verifiable at amiosp.com/student-verifications.
Learning Outcomes
Upon completing this program, participants will be able to:
- Identify bloodborne pathogens and transmission routes: HBV (most infectious, vaccine-preventable, survives on surfaces up to 7 days), HCV (most common, no vaccine, chronic infection risk), HIV (least infectious of the three, no vaccine, treatment advances), and the transmission routes (percutaneous — needlestick/sharps; mucous membrane; non-intact skin) that define occupational exposure.
- Develop and maintain the Exposure Control Plan: exposure determination by job classification, the schedule and method for implementing each provision (universal precautions, engineering controls, PPE, vaccination, post-exposure, housekeeping), and the annual review and update requirement.
- Apply universal/standard precautions: treating all blood and OPIM as infectious regardless of the source individual’s perceived infection status, and the work practices that prevent contact with blood and OPIM.
- Implement engineering controls for sharps safety: sharps containers (placement, fill level, replacement), self-sheathing needles, needleless IV systems, blunt suture needles, and the annual review of engineering controls with frontline employee input per the Needlestick Safety and Prevention Act.
- Select and use PPE: gloves (when to wear, when to change, proper removal), gowns/aprons, face shields and eye protection, masks, and the PPE selection based on the type and anticipated amount of exposure.
- Manage the HBV vaccination programme: offering the three-dose HBV vaccine at no cost within 10 working days of assignment, informed declination, post-vaccination antibody testing, and the employer obligation to make the vaccine available regardless of employee acceptance.
- Execute post-exposure procedures: immediate wound care (wash with soap and water, flush mucous membranes), exposure incident reporting, source individual identification and consent for testing, exposed employee baseline blood collection, post-exposure prophylaxis referral, and the healthcare professional’s written opinion.

Mode of Delivery
Course Content
Training should emphasize on the following contents;
- Introduction to bloodborne pathogens, including the types of diseases that can be transmitted through contact with contaminated blood or other bodily fluids.
- Identifying the sources and routes of bloodborne pathogen transmission in the workplace.
- Implementing standard precautions to prevent exposure, including the proper use of personal protective equipment (PPE) and the proper disposal of contaminated materials.
- Understanding the requirements of the OSHA Bloodborne Pathogens Standard and the employer's exposure control plan.
- Proper procedures for handling and disposing of potentially contaminated materials, including sharps and biohazardous waste.
- The importance of proper hand hygiene and the use of hand sanitizers.
- Procedures for responding to and reporting exposure incidents, including the availability of post-exposure medical evaluation and follow-up.
- The role of Hepatitis B vaccine and the importance of being vaccinated.
- The importance of regular training and education on bloodborne pathogens and exposure prevention.
- Final assessment and certification.

Frequently Asked Questions (FAQs)
This training program is intended to provide entry-level general industry workers information about their rights, employer responsibilities, and how to file a complaint as well as how to identify, abate, avoid and prevent job related hazards on a job site. The training covers a variety of general industry safety and health hazards which a worker may encounter at a work site. Training should emphasize hazard identification, avoidance, control and prevention, not OSHA standards.
