Course Overview
The Combustible Dust Hazards course offered by the American Institute of Safety Professionals offers necessary Hazard training so that SPs, Plant Operators, and Maintenance personnel acquire the knowledge and skills necessary to identify, evaluate and manage risks posed by combustible dust in industrial settings. Even seemingly innocuous materials, such as sugar, flour, wood, aluminum and iron, can become highly combustible dust and dangerously explosive when handled as fine particulates and suspended in air. This course clarifies the science of dust explosions, identifies ignition sources and conditions of dust concentration and confinement, and outlines in detail the methodologies necessary to avert dust explosions. Each participant will be introduced to important real-world case studies and incidents which demonstrate the peril of inadequate dust control and housekeeping. For example, the 2008 Georgia sugar plant explosion and the 2010 titanium dust explosion in West Virginia. The course is designed to reflect OSHA and NFPA Dust Hazard analysis and standards for explosion control and housekeeping. Learners will understand the practical aspects of emergency plans, safe layout designs, dust control, and selective ventilation. This training applies to food processing, metal fabrication, pharmaceutical, agricultural, recycling, and general manufacturing industries. It enables personnel to identify dust-forming combustible materials, evaluate the explosives and applies appropriate control measures. After finishing this course, participants will devise comprehensive and effective dust hazard management programs, which will protect employees, avoid explosions, and comply with the national safety standards and regulations, thereby, achieving a dust hazard management program which results in cleaner, safer, and more robust industrial workplaces.
Learning Outcomes
  • Understanding of the dangers and hazards associated with combustible dusts in the workplace
  • Knowledge of OSHA regulations and standards related to combustible dusts
    • Awareness of the physical properties of dusts and how they can contribute to dust explosions
