Course Overview
The Confined Space Entry Training Program course from the American Institute of Safety Professionals provides programme-level management training that extends beyond the Permit-Required Confined Spaces course. While that course teaches the standard's requirements and individual role competencies (entrant, attendant, supervisor), this course teaches how to build, manage, and sustain the complete confined space programme: conducting the facility-wide space inventory, evaluating hazards for each space, developing space-specific entry procedures, managing the permit system, establishing and maintaining the rescue programme, managing the atmospheric monitoring equipment programme, training all personnel categories, and conducting the programme evaluation that ensures ongoing compliance.
The curriculum covers confined space programme development, facility-wide space inventory (identification, classification, documentation), space-specific hazard evaluation, entry procedure development for each permit space, permit system governance (issuance, posting, cancellation, record retention), rescue programme management (non-entry rescue equipment, rescue team/service evaluation, practice drills, coordination agreements), atmospheric monitoring equipment programme (instrument inventory, calibration scheduling, bump testing, maintenance, documentation), multi-employer coordination for confined space work, programme training management, annual programme review, and the programme documentation that demonstrates systematic compliance during audits and inspections. All training is delivered 100% online through the American Institute of Safety Professionals LMS.
Learning Outcomes
Upon completing this program, participants will be able to:
- Conduct facility-wide confined space inventory: systematically identifying every confined space in the facility, classifying each as PRCS or non-PRCS, documenting location/hazards/classification, and the inventory that serves as the programme foundation.
- Develop space-specific entry procedures: written procedures for each permit-required confined space specifying hazards, atmospheric testing requirements, ventilation, isolation, PPE, rescue provisions, and the procedure customisation that ensures each entry is planned for the specific space.
- Manage the permit system: permit development, issuance authority, required elements verification, posting, duration limits, cancellation criteria, and the record retention that documents the programme.
- Manage the rescue programme: evaluating and selecting rescue services, non-entry rescue equipment procurement and maintenance, practice drills (timing rescue response), annual rescue service re-evaluation, and the rescue readiness verification.
- Manage the atmospheric monitoring programme: instrument inventory, calibration scheduling per manufacturer requirements, daily bump testing, maintenance, documentation, and the equipment programme that ensures every reading is accurate.
- Evaluate programme effectiveness: annual review of entry procedures, permit records analysis, rescue drill results, near-miss review, and the programme evaluation that identifies improvement opportunities.

Frequently Asked Questions (FAQs)
This training program is intended to provide entry-level general industry workers information about their rights, employer responsibilities, and how to file a complaint as well as how to identify, abate, avoid and prevent job related hazards on a job site. The training covers a variety of general industry safety and health hazards which a worker may encounter at a work site. Training should emphasize hazard identification, avoidance, control and prevention, not OSHA standards.
