Defensive Driving

The Defensive Driving course from the American Institute of Safety Professionals provides comprehensive training on the driving techniques, hazard anticipation skills, and behavioural disciplines that prevent motor vehicle collisions. Motor vehicle incidents are the #1 cause of workplace fatalities in the United States, killing more workers than falls, electrocution, struck-by, and caught-in combined. Every employee who drives as part of their job whether in a company vehicle, personal vehicle on company business, or commercial motor vehicle faces this risk. Defensive driving is the competency that reduces it.

The curriculum covers defensive driving principles (anticipation, space management, visibility), the Smith System or similar systematic driving methodology, hazard anticipation and recognition (scanning, identifying potential conflicts before they develop), following distance (3–4 second rule, increased distance for adverse conditions, heavy vehicles), intersection safety (the most common collision location), lane change and merge safety, speed management, distracted driving elimination (phone, navigation, eating, passengers, cognitive distraction), fatigue management (recognition, prevention, countermeasures), impaired driving prohibition, adverse weather driving (rain, fog, ice, snow, wind), night driving, backing safety, and the post-incident procedures. All training is delivered 100 percent online through Microsoft Teams and the American Institute of Safety Professionals LMS.

Upon completion, graduates receive a certificate, wallet card, and transcript, employer-verifiable at amiosp.com/student-verifications.

Upon completing this program, participants will be able to:

• Apply defensive driving principles: driving with anticipation (expecting other drivers to make mistakes), maintaining space cushions in all directions, maximising visibility (clean windows, adjusted mirrors, headlights on), and the proactive driving mindset that prevents collisions rather than reacting to them.
• Scan and anticipate hazards: 12–15 second visual lead time, mirror checks every 5–8 seconds, identifying developing hazards before they become emergencies, and the scanning pattern that provides maximum situational awareness.
• Maintain safe following distance: 3–4 second rule under normal conditions, increased to 5–8 seconds for rain, fog, night, or heavy vehicles, and the space management that provides reaction and stopping distance.
• Eliminate distractions: phone prohibition (hands-free is still cognitively distracting), navigation pre-programming, eating/drinking management, passenger management, and the commitment to driving as a single task requiring full attention.
• Drive safely in adverse conditions: reduced speed, increased following distance, headlights on, braking technique for wet and icy surfaces, hydroplaning awareness, fog procedures, and the decision to delay travel when conditions exceed safe driving parameters.
• Manage fatigue: recognising fatigue symptoms (difficulty focusing, heavy eyelids, lane drifting, missing exits), prevention (adequate sleep, scheduled breaks, trip planning), and the only effective countermeasure (stopping and sleeping not coffee, not open windows, not loud music).

• Backing Safety: check before reversing, mirrors, cameras, walk-around
• Impaired Driving: zero tolerance, medication effects, supervisor responsibility
• Post-Incident: scene safety, reporting, evidence preservation, drug/alcohol testing requirements

Participants will receive online training through Microsoft Teams and LMS. Courses are offered by accredited broadcasters and backed by expert instruction and official study materials. All assessments are conducted online and successful participants are awarded certificates that are accepted internationally.

The Defensive Driving program is designed to enhance drivers’ awareness, judgment, and decision-making skills to prevent road accidents and reduce driving-related risks. This course focuses on identifying potential hazards, anticipating unsafe actions of other road users, and adopting safe driving behaviors to protect drivers, passengers, pedestrians, and company assets.

The Defensive Driving program helps participants reduce road accidents, improve driving performance, comply with traffic regulations, and promote a culture of safe and responsible driving both on and off duty.

The program is designed to offer flexible online learning with a minimum instructional contact time of 8 hours. Most learners successfully complete the course within one month, allowing them to progress at their own pace while balancing professional commitments.

Candidates can take this exam through an assigned portal from the American Institute of Safety Professionals. A passing score is 70% or higher, and exam results are provided right after by email to the address provided. The exam is open-book, allowing candidates to validate their answers. Any candidates who do not pass have 1 month after their exam to go through the training materials and can take the exam 3 additional times.
