Course Overview
The Defensive Driving Course by the American Institute of Safety Professionals specializes in the safe operation of motor vehicles on construction sites as stipulated within OSHA standard §1926.601 – Motor Vehicles. This training also covers off-highway vehicles and the requirements of the safe construction site vehicles including functioning braking systems, emergency and parking brakes, safety and warning lights, horn, and reverse alarms for safe maneuving. Training participants are taught on the safe cab and windshield clear vision controls, fogging and defrosting devices, and protecting cab shaeds or canopies for operator protection. Training also covers the safe loading and injury preventing seating of passengers in vehicles for transport, seat belts, and securing materials and the safe operation of dump trucks including positive dump body supports, safe control lever latch systems and tailgate operation, circuit dump systems and underbody, and standard pre-shift inspections, including brakes, emergency stop systems, and tires for safe operation and control of the vehicle during its daily operation. Completion of the program equips the participants with the skills and knowledge necessary for safe construction site vehicle operation, defensive driving, accident and assault avoidance, and self protection in the work site. Workplace safety increases dramatically when participants complete the training program.

Mode of Delivery
Participants will receive online training through Microsoft Teams and LMS. Courses are offered by accredited broadcasters and backed by expert instruction and official study materials. All assessments are conducted online and successful participants are awarded certificates that are accepted internationally.

Training should emphasize on the following contents;

  • Introduction: Overview of defensive driving and its importance in reducing accidents and traffic violations, understanding the factors that contribute to accidents, review of the legal and ethical responsibilities of drivers.
  • Perception and Decision Making: Understanding how perception and decision-making affect driving performance, identifying and addressing common perceptual and decision-making errors.
  • Vehicle Control and Handling: Understanding the basic principles of vehicle control and handling, identifying and addressing common vehicle control problems, techniques for skid control and recovery.
  • Speed and Space Management: Understanding the relationship between speed and stopping distance, identifying and addressing common speed and space management errors, techniques for maintaining a safe following distance and merging safely.
  • Intersections and Turns: Understanding the hazards associated with intersections and turns, identifying and addressing common intersection and turn errors, techniques for making safe turns and navigating intersections.
  • Hazardous Roadway Conditions: Understanding the hazards associated with different roadway conditions, identifying and addressing common hazards associated with rain, snow, ice, and other weather conditions, techniques for driving in adverse weather and on slippery roads.
  • Fatigue and Distraction: Understanding the effects of fatigue and distraction on driving performance, identifying and addressing common fatigue and distraction-related errors, techniques for managing fatigue and minimizing distractions.
Entry Requirements
This program follows global workplace health and safety standards, and is taught by industry experts. Successful students receive an American Institute of Safety Professionals accredited certificate which is recognized by several employers and regulatory bodies. Graduates receive a master certificate, course completion certificate (if applicable), an official transcript, a wallet card, and access to a professional safety network which promotes ongoing learning and career growth.
Program Duration
The program is designed to offer flexible online learning with a minimum instructional contact time of 8 hours. Most learners successfully complete the course within one month, allowing them to progress at their own pace while balancing professional commitments.
Examination
Candidates can take this exam through an assigned portal from the American Institute of Safety Professionals. A passing score is 70% or higher, and exam results are provided right after by email to the address provided. The exam is open-book, allowing candidates to validate their answers. Any candidates who do not pass have 1 month after their exam to go through the training materials and can take the exam 3 additional times.

This training program is intended to provide entry-level general industry workers information about their rights, employer responsibilities, and how to file a complaint as well as how to identify, abate, avoid and prevent job related hazards on a job site. The training covers a variety of general industry safety and health hazards which a worker may encounter at a work site. Training should emphasize hazard identification, avoidance, control and prevention, not OSHA standards.
