Course Overview
The OSHA Focus Four Hazards course from the American Institute of Safety Professionals covers all four categories of hazards that cause the vast majority of construction fatalities in a single comprehensive programme: falls from elevation, struck-by incidents, caught-in/between events, and electrocution. Together, these four hazard categories account for approximately 60 percent of all construction worker deaths every year. OSHA developed the Focus Four framework specifically because eliminating these four hazard categories would save more construction lives than any other intervention. This combined course provides construction workers, supervisors, safety officers, and project managers with the hazard recognition, OSHA standard knowledge, and prevention competency for all four categories in one integrated programme.
The combined Focus Four course is the most efficient way to build construction hazard awareness across the entire fatal-four spectrum. While the American Institute of Safety Professionals also offers individual deep-dive courses for each hazard category (separate Fall Hazards, Struck-By, Caught-In/Between, and Electrocution courses), this combined programme covers all four in balanced depth, making it ideal for site orientations, general construction safety training, annual refresher training, and any situation where broad Focus Four awareness is more appropriate than single-hazard specialisation.
The curriculum is structured in four modules: Module 1 covers fall hazards (OSHA 29 CFR 1926 Subpart M fall protection: 6-foot trigger, guardrails, safety nets, PFAS, harness inspection, anchorage, rescue planning). Module 2 covers struck-by hazards (the four subcategories: falling objects, flying objects, swinging loads, rolling vehicles/equipment, with overhead protection, crane awareness, and traffic management). Module 3 covers caught-in/between hazards (excavation cave-in per Subpart P, soil classification, trench protective systems, machinery entanglement, vehicle compression, demolition collapse). Module 4 covers electrocution hazards (overhead power lines per Subpart K, underground utilities, GFCI requirements, temporary wiring, damaged tools, and emergency response). Each module includes OSHA regulatory requirements, hazard recognition techniques, prevention controls, and real-world fatality case studies.
All training is delivered 100 percent online through Microsoft Teams and the American Institute of Safety Professionals Learning Management System (LMS). Upon successful completion, graduates receive an American Institute of Safety Professionals certificate, professional wallet card, and official transcript, all employer-verifiable at amiosp.com/student-verifications.
Learning Outcomes
Upon completing this program, participants will be able to:
Module 1: Fall Hazards (#1 Construction Killer)
- Identify fall hazards across all construction activities: roofing, leading edges, unprotected sides, holes, scaffolds, ladders, steel erection, and elevated work platforms.
- Apply the 6-foot fall protection trigger per Subpart M and select appropriate protection: guardrail systems, safety net systems, and personal fall arrest systems (PFAS).
- Inspect PFAS components (harness, lanyard, SRL, anchorage) and calculate fall distance clearance to prevent ground contact after a fall arrest event.
- Understand rescue planning requirements: suspension trauma awareness and the OSHA mandate that rescue must be available before PFAS is used.
Module 2: Struck-By Hazards (#2 Construction Killer)
- Classify struck-by hazards into four subcategories: falling objects, flying objects, swinging objects, and rolling objects, with prevention strategies for each.
- Implement falling object protection: toe boards, debris nets, canopies, tool tethering, and barricading below overhead work.
- Apply crane and rigging awareness for struck-by prevention: load securement, tag lines, swing radius barricading, and operator-rigger coordination.
- Implement vehicle traffic management: designated routes, spotters, backing procedures, proximity detection, and pedestrian segregation.
Module 3: Caught-In/Between Hazards (#3 Construction Killer)
- Classify soil types (A, B, C, stable rock) using visual and manual tests per Subpart P Appendix A.
- Select trench protective systems: sloping, benching, shoring, and shielding matched to soil type, depth, and conditions.
- Apply competent person responsibilities for excavation: daily inspections, authority to remove workers, knowledge of soil classification.
- Identify machinery entanglement, vehicle compression, and demolition collapse hazards with prevention controls.
Module 4: Electrocution Hazards (#4 Construction Killer)
- Apply overhead power line clearance distances per Subpart K and Subpart CC, including the 10-foot minimum approach for lines up to 50 kV.
- Manage underground utility protection: 811/One-Call, locate and mark, tolerance zones, and hand-digging requirements.
- Apply GFCI requirements for construction sites (§1926.405(a)(2)(ii)) and inspect portable tools and extension cords.
- Respond to electrocution emergencies: the do-not-touch rule, power isolation, and CPR/AED awareness.

How This Relates To Other Qualifications
The American Institute of Safety Professionals offers Focus Four training at two levels:
Combined (This Course)- OSHA Focus Four Hazards — YOU ARE HERE (all four categories in one programme)
- OSHA Focus Four — Fall Hazards (Subpart M deep-dive)
- OSHA Focus Four — Struck-By Hazards (four subcategories deep-dive)
- OSHA Focus Four — Caught-In/Between Hazards (Subpart P, machinery, demolition)
- OSHA Focus Four — Electrocution Hazards (Subpart K, power lines, GFCI)
- 30-Hour Construction Safety (includes Focus Four within comprehensive 29 CFR 1926)
- Construction Safety Management (managing Focus Four programmes at the project level)
- International Diploma in Construction Safety Management (diploma depth)
Take the combined course for broad awareness. Take individual courses for deep-dive expertise in specific hazard categories.
Why Choose American Institute of Safety Professionals's Qualifications
- All Four Killers, One Course: provides the most efficient pathway to comprehensive Focus Four competency by integrating all four major construction hazard categories into a single programme, rather than separating them into multiple standalone courses. This ensures balanced coverage across all critical risk areas.
- 60% of Construction Deaths in One Course: addresses the four leading causes of construction fatalities—falls, struck-by incidents, caught-in/between events, and electrocution—which together account for approximately 60 percent of all construction deaths. The course focuses on the most statistically significant hazards in the industry.
- Ideal for Site Orientations and Refreshers: designed for project-wide safety orientations, onboarding programmes, and annual refresher training where broad hazard awareness is required across all Focus Four categories rather than deep specialization in a single hazard type.
- Fatality Case Studies for Each Category: includes real OSHA fatality investigation case studies across all four Focus Four hazard types, demonstrating that each incident was preventable and reinforcing the importance of proactive hazard recognition and control measures.
- Individual Deep-Dives Available: offers pathway options for learners requiring advanced specialization, with separate dedicated courses available for Fall Hazards, Struck-By Hazards, Caught-In/Between Hazards, and Electrocution Hazards through the American Institute of Safety Professionals.
- 100% Online, Flexible, Recognised Across 42 Countries: fully online delivery with employer-verifiable certification available at amiosp.com/student-verifications, supporting global recognition and professional validation.

Frequently Asked Questions (FAQs)
This training program is intended to provide entry-level general industry workers information about their rights, employer responsibilities, and how to file a complaint as well as how to identify, abate, avoid and prevent job related hazards on a job site. The training covers a variety of general industry safety and health hazards which a worker may encounter at a work site. Training should emphasize hazard identification, avoidance, control and prevention, not OSHA standards.
