Environmental Impact Assessment (EIA)

The Environmental Impact Assessment (EIA) course from the American Institute of Safety Professionals provides comprehensive training on the systematic process for predicting, evaluating, and mitigating the environmental effects of proposed projects before they proceed. Upon completing this program, participants will be able to:

• Apply the EIA process: screening (does the project require EIA?), scoping (which impacts to assess), baseline studies (existing environmental conditions), impact prediction (nature, magnitude, duration, significance), mitigation development, reporting (EIS/EA), review, and decision-making.
• Prepare Environmental Impact Statements: describing the proposed action and alternatives, the affected environment, environmental consequences, mitigation measures, and the EIS structure that satisfies NEPA requirements.
• Conduct impact assessment across environmental media: air quality, water resources, soil and geology, ecology and biodiversity, noise, cultural resources, visual/landscape, socioeconomic, and cumulative impacts.
• Develop mitigation measures: avoidance (design changes), minimisation (best management practices), restoration, and compensation — the mitigation hierarchy applied to each significant impact.
• Manage public participation: scoping meetings, public comment periods, responding to comments, and the transparent stakeholder engagement that NEPA and equivalent laws require.
