Course Overview
The Managing Onsite Traffic Safely course offered by the American Institute of Safety Professionals is an important aspect of site safety outlined by OSHA Subpart O, which includes the operation and maintenance and parking of vehicles and mechanized equipment used in construction. These laws state that any equipment near highways or active work zones overnight must be clearly marked and warn of possible collisions with lights, reflectors, and barricades. Workers inflating or handling split-rim tires must use safety cages or equivalent devices to avoid explosive accidents. Heavy machinery that is suspended by hoists or jacks must be blocked or cribbed to eliminate risks of collapsing and to prevent parking brake failure, wheel chocks must be used whenever a vehicle is parked, especially on an incline. Equipment that is operating near power lines must maintain safe clearance of a minimum of 10 feet for lines that are up to 50 kV and greater safe distance for higher voltages with a designated observer ensuring safe separation. Off-highway vehicles must have functional engine-service brakes, emergency brakes, parking brakes, headlights, taillights, and backup sounds to ensure safety for low visibility conditions. Vehicles that have an obstructed rear view must use audible backup alarms or reverse spotters. To ensure the safety of operators and workers, additional safety features need to be implemented. These include seat belts, secured tools, positive locking supports for dump bodies, and cab shields on haulage vehicles. Daily inspections conducted before each shift on brakes, tires, steering, and safety devices are crucial to ensure reliability. The goal of standards is to reduce the number of accidents related to traffic, improve visibility, and guarantee that the movement of vehicles and machinery is controlled on construction sites.
Learning Outcomes
Upon completing the Managing Onsite Traffic Safely course, participants will be able to:
  • Understand OSHA, local, and international regulations, standards, and industry best practices for effective onsite traffic management.

This training program is intended to provide entry-level general industry workers information about their rights, employer responsibilities, and how to file a complaint as well as how to identify, abate, avoid and prevent job related hazards on a job site. The training covers a variety of general industry safety and health hazards which a worker may encounter at a work site. Training should emphasize hazard identification, avoidance, control and prevention, not OSHA standards.
