The Managing Onsite Traffic Safely course from the American Institute of Safety Professionals addresses one of the most common and most preventable causes of workplace fatalities: pedestrian workers being struck by vehicles and mobile equipment on worksites. Construction sites, industrial facilities, warehouses, distribution centres, and any workplace where vehicles and pedestrians share space face this hazard every day. The simple act of a dump truck reversing, a forklift turning a corner, or a delivery vehicle entering a congested yard creates struck-by exposure for every pedestrian worker in the path. These incidents are almost always fatal or catastrophically injurious because of the mass differential between a multi-ton vehicle and a human body.
The fundamental principle of onsite traffic management is physical separation: if vehicles and pedestrians never occupy the same space at the same time, vehicle-pedestrian strikes cannot occur. When physical separation is not achievable (and on most active worksites complete separation is not possible at all times), the course teaches the layered controls that reduce risk: traffic management plans, designated vehicle routes, speed limits, one-way systems, pedestrian walkways, spotter procedures for reversing, backing alarms and cameras, high-visibility clothing, signage, barriers, and the communication protocols that ensure drivers and pedestrians know where each other are.
The curriculum covers traffic management plan (TMP) development, vehicle-pedestrian segregation strategies (physical barriers, designated routes, time separation), haul road design (width, gradient, turning radii, surface maintenance, speed limits), pedestrian walkway design and marking, spotter procedures and communication for reversing vehicles, backing safety (alarms, cameras, proximity detection, no-reverse zones), delivery vehicle management (designated loading/unloading areas, gate control, driver orientation), temporary traffic control on public roads adjacent to worksites (MUTCD awareness), internal signage and marking systems, high-visibility PPE requirements, lighting for low-visibility conditions, and the incident investigation approaches specific to vehicle-pedestrian strikes.
