Course Overview
The Managing Safety and Health in General Industry course from the American Institute of Safety Professionals provides comprehensive management-level training on designing, implementing, and governing safety and health programmes in general industry environments: manufacturing, warehousing, distribution, healthcare, hospitality, retail, office, and every workplace governed by OSHA 29 CFR 1910 (General Industry Standards). This is the management-level counterpart to the technical general industry courses (HazCom, machine guarding, LOTO, confined space): while those courses teach specific standards, this course teaches how to manage the overall safety programme that ensures compliance with all of them.
The curriculum covers OSHA’s Recommended Practices for Safety and Health Programs (the four core elements: management leadership, worker participation, hazard identification and assessment, hazard prevention and control, plus education/training, programme evaluation, and communication), the OSHA 29 CFR 1910 regulatory framework (navigating Subparts by topic), safety management system design (policy, planning, implementation, checking, management review), workplace hazard assessment methodology, safety inspection programme design, incident investigation and root cause analysis, safety committee formation and management, regulatory compliance auditing, safety performance metrics (TRIR, DART, leading indicators), and the management review process that drives continuous improvement.
All training is delivered 100 percent online through Microsoft Teams and the American Institute of Safety Professionals LMS. Upon completion, graduates receive an American Institute of Safety Professionals certificate, wallet card, and transcript, employer-verifiable at amiosp.com/student-verifications.
Learning Outcomes
Upon completing this program, participants will be able to:
- Apply OSHA’s Recommended Practices for Safety and Health Programs: implementing the seven core elements (management leadership, worker participation, hazard identification and assessment, hazard prevention and control, education and training, program evaluation and improvement, and communication and coordination), and integrating each element into a functioning general industry safety program.
- Navigate the OSHA 29 CFR 1910 framework: understanding Subparts D through Z, identifying applicable requirements for specific workplace activities, and applying regulatory navigation skills to ensure all relevant OSHA standards are correctly identified and implemented.
- Design safety management systems: developing and implementing safety policies, structured hazard identification processes, risk assessment methodologies, control measures, competency assurance systems, performance monitoring tools, incident investigation processes, compliance auditing systems, and management review mechanisms.
- Design and manage a safety inspection programme: establishing inspection types (daily, weekly, monthly, annual), developing OSHA-aligned inspection checklists, documenting findings, tracking corrective actions, and ensuring inspection frequency effectively identifies hazards before incidents occur.
- Conduct incident investigations: performing structured investigations including evidence collection, witness interviews, root cause analysis focused on systemic and management failures, recommendation development, corrective action implementation, and verification of effectiveness to prevent recurrence.
- Manage safety committees: forming effective committees, defining membership roles, structuring meetings, developing agendas, tracking action items, and ensuring committee outputs result in measurable safety improvements rather than administrative activity.
- Measure and report safety performance: utilizing TRIR, DART, severity rates, and leading indicators (inspections, observations, training completion, near-miss reporting), developing dashboards, producing management reports, and using performance data to drive continuous improvement.

Why Choose American Institute of Safety Professionals's Qualifications

Frequently Asked Questions (FAQs)
This training program is intended to provide entry-level general industry workers information about their rights, employer responsibilities, and how to file a complaint as well as how to identify, abate, avoid and prevent job related hazards on a job site. The training covers a variety of general industry safety and health hazards which a worker may encounter at a work site. Training should emphasize hazard identification, avoidance, control and prevention, not OSHA standards.
