Course Overview
Learning Outcomes
Upon completing this program, participants will be able to:
- Conduct PPE hazard assessments: walking through the workplace to identify hazards (impact, penetration, compression, chemical, heat, radiation, noise, fall, drowning), documenting hazards by work area and task, and selecting PPE that protects against each identified hazard.
- Select and inspect head protection: ANSI Z89.1 Type I (top impact) versus Type II (top and lateral), Class E (electrical 20kV), G (2.2kV), C (no electrical), inspection for cracks/dents/UV degradation, and replacement criteria.
- Select eye and face protection: ANSI Z87.1 impact rating, safety glasses versus goggles versus face shields based on hazard type, welding shade selection, prescription safety eyewear, and the side protection requirement.
- Select hearing protection: NRR (Noise Reduction Rating), OSHA derating, earplugs versus earmuffs, dual protection for extreme noise, fit and comfort considerations, and the HPD that workers will actually wear.
- Select hand protection: cut-resistant (ANSI cut levels A1–A9), chemical-resistant (nitrile, neoprene, butyl — matched to chemical per permeation data), insulating (voltage-rated for electrical), and the glove selection based on specific hazard exposure.
- Select foot protection: ASTM F2413 safety-toe (impact/compression ratings), metatarsal guards, EH (electrical hazard) rating, puncture-resistant plates, and the selection based on workplace hazards.
- Understand respiratory protection fundamentals: when RPE is required, APR versus SAR, fit testing requirement, medical evaluation, and the 1910.134 programme elements at awareness level.
