Public Sector Worker Safety

The Public Sector Worker Safety course from the American Institute of Safety Professionals addresses the unique safety challenges faced by government and municipal workers: public works crews, utility workers, parks and recreation staff, building inspectors, code enforcement officers, water/wastewater operators, road maintenance crews, and every public employee who works in environments ranging from offices to active roadways to confined spaces. Public sector workers face the full spectrum of workplace hazards but in the unique context of serving the public: working on active roadways with traffic, entering private properties for inspections, maintaining aging infrastructure, operating in all weather conditions, and interacting with members of the public who may be uncooperative or hostile.

The curriculum covers public sector hazard assessment, field operations safety (roadway work zones, utility maintenance, parks maintenance, building inspection), vehicle and fleet safety for government vehicles, public interaction safety (dealing with confrontational individuals, personal safety during inspections and enforcement), confined space entry for water/wastewater and utility operations, trenching and excavation for utility work, electrical safety for utility and facilities workers, PPE management across diverse public sector operations, emergency response roles for public sector workers, and safety programme management in the public sector context (budgetary constraints, union considerations, multi-department coordination). All training is delivered 100 percent online through the American Institute of Safety Professionals LMS. Upon completing this program, participants will be able to:

• Assess hazards across diverse public sector operations: the unique combination of roadway exposure, utility infrastructure, public interaction, weather exposure, and aging facilities that public sector workers face.
• Implement field operations safety: roadway work zone safety (MUTCD compliance, flagging, traffic control), utility maintenance safety, parks and grounds maintenance, and the field safety for workers who operate in uncontrolled public environments.
• Manage public interaction safety: personal safety during inspections and enforcement, de-escalation with confrontational individuals, lone worker protocols, and the safety considerations for workers who enter private properties.
• Apply confined space and trenching safety for utility operations: water/wastewater confined spaces, sewer entry, utility trench safety, and the infrastructure maintenance that exposes public sector workers to these hazards.
• Manage safety programmes within public sector constraints: budget limitations, union agreements, multi-department coordination, political considerations, and the programme management that achieves safety improvement within public sector realities.
