Course Overview
Learning Outcomes
Upon completing this program, participants will be able to:
- Recognise scaffold hazards: incomplete platforms, missing guardrails, overloading, unstable base, power line proximity, falling objects from above, and weather-degraded conditions.
- Apply scaffold fall protection: guardrails required at 10 feet on supported scaffolds, PFAS required on suspended scaffolds, cross-braces cannot serve as guardrails unless meeting height requirements.
- Use proper scaffold access: approved ladders, stairway towers, direct access from adjacent surfaces, and the absolute prohibition against climbing cross-braces.
- Respect scaffold load limits: understanding light-duty (25 psf), medium-duty (50 psf), and heavy-duty (75 psf) ratings, not exceeding rated capacity, and distributing loads evenly.
- Read and respond to scaffold tags: green (safe for use), yellow (caution/modified use), red (unsafe/do not use), and never working on a red-tagged scaffold.
- Report scaffold deficiencies: identifying and reporting damaged components, missing guardrails, incomplete platforms, and any condition that compromises scaffold safety.
Core Curriculum Topics
- Scaffold Hazard Recognition: incomplete platforms, missing guardrails, overload, instability, power lines
- Fall Protection for Users: 10-foot trigger, guardrails, PFAS on suspended, cross-brace prohibition
- Scaffold Access: approved ladders, stairways, direct access, no climbing cross-braces
- Platform Safety: complete decking, gap limits, overhang, load distribution
- Load Capacity: duty ratings, rated load, material and personnel limits
- Tagging System: green/yellow/red, user response to each tag
- Weather Precautions: wind limits, ice, rain, wet surfaces, lightning
- Overhead Hazards: power line clearance, falling objects from higher tiers
- Prohibited Actions: climbing cross-braces, exceeding load, working on red-tagged scaffolds
- Reporting Deficiencies: what to report, who to report to, do not use until corrected

Frequently Asked Questions (FAQs)
This training program is intended to provide entry-level general industry workers information about their rights, employer responsibilities, and how to file a complaint as well as how to identify, abate, avoid and prevent job related hazards on a job site. The training covers a variety of general industry safety and health hazards which a worker may encounter at a work site. Training should emphasize hazard identification, avoidance, control and prevention, not OSHA standards.
