Course Overview
Learning Outcomes
Upon completing this program, participants will be able to:
- Determine when stairways or ladders are required: at elevation breaks of 19 inches or more where no ramp, runway, sloped embankment, or personnel hoist is provided.
- Select appropriate ladder types: step ladders (self-supporting, non-adjustable), extension ladders (non-self-supporting, adjustable), fixed ladders, and job-made ladders, matching the ladder to the task and load requirements.
- Set up extension ladders correctly: 4:1 angle ratio, extend 3 feet above the landing, secure at top and/or bottom, place on stable level surface, and face the ladder when climbing with three-point contact.
- Inspect ladders before each use: structural damage, cracked rails, missing rungs, defective hardware, label legibility, and the removal-from-service criteria for defective ladders.
- Apply stairway requirements: uniform riser height and tread depth, handrails (one on open side, both on 44-inch+ width), landings, and the construction that provides safe vertical access.
- Apply fall protection at stairways and ladderways: guardrails at stairway openings, offset barricades at ladderway floor openings, and the protection that prevents falls through access points.
