Course Overview
The Environmental Management Systems (EMS) course from the American Institute of Safety Professionals provides comprehensive training on designing, implementing, and managing an environmental management system using ISO 14001 as the framework. An EMS provides the systematic approach to managing an organisation's environmental responsibilities: identifying environmental aspects and impacts, ensuring legal compliance, setting environmental objectives, implementing operational controls, monitoring environmental performance, and driving continual improvement through management review.
The curriculum covers the ISO 14001 framework (Plan-Do-Check-Act), environmental policy development, context of the organisation (internal/external issues, interested parties), environmental aspects and impacts identification (significant aspects determination), legal and other requirements (environmental legislation, permits, consent conditions), environmental objectives and targets, operational planning and control, emergency preparedness for environmental incidents, monitoring and measurement, compliance evaluation, internal auditing, management review, and the integration of EMS with safety management systems (ISO 45001) for combined HSE management. All training is delivered 100% online through the American Institute of Safety Professionals LMS.
Learning Outcomes
Upon completing this program, participants will be able to:
- Identify environmental aspects and their impacts: understanding the relationship between activities, products, and services (aspects) and the changes to the environment they cause (impacts), and determining which aspects are significant.
- Ensure environmental legal compliance: identifying applicable environmental legislation (Clean Air Act, Clean Water Act, RCRA, SPCC, state and local requirements), maintaining the legal register, and evaluating compliance periodically.
- Set environmental objectives and targets: measurable environmental improvement goals (emission reductions, waste minimisation, energy efficiency, water conservation) aligned with the environmental policy and significant aspects.
- Implement operational controls: procedures and controls for activities associated with significant environmental aspects, including supplier and contractor environmental management.
- Conduct environmental audits: internal EMS audits to verify conformity with ISO 14001, identify non-conformities, and drive corrective action and continual improvement.
- Integrate environmental management systems with safety management: combining ISO 14001 (environment) with ISO 45001 (safety) for an integrated HSE management system that manages environmental and safety risks through a single framework.
