Course Overview
The Ergonomic Hazards in General Industry course from the American Institute of Safety Professionals provides comprehensive training on identifying, assessing, and controlling the musculoskeletal disorder (MSD) risk factors that affect workers in manufacturing, warehousing, office, healthcare, and every general industry environment. MSDs (back injuries, carpal tunnel syndrome, tendinitis, rotator cuff injuries) are the most common category of workplace injury, accounting for approximately one-third of all workers’ compensation claims. Unlike acute injuries that result from a single event, MSDs develop gradually from cumulative exposure to ergonomic risk factors: forceful exertions, awkward postures, repetitive motions, contact stress, vibration, and static positions.
OSHA does not have a specific ergonomics standard, but the General Duty Clause (Section 5(a)(1)) has been used to cite employers for ergonomic hazards that cause MSDs. This course teaches the risk factor identification, ergonomic assessment, and control implementation that prevents MSDs and satisfies the General Duty Clause obligation to provide a workplace free from recognised hazards.
The curriculum covers MSD types and mechanisms, ergonomic risk factors (force, posture, repetition, contact stress, vibration, static position, environmental), workstation ergonomics (office, manufacturing, laboratory), manual material handling (NIOSH Lifting Equation awareness, pushing, pulling, carrying), upper extremity ergonomics (hand tools, keyboard, assembly), ergonomic assessment tools (RULA, REBA, Strain Index, NIOSH Lifting Equation), engineering and administrative controls, ergonomic programme design (management commitment, worker involvement, hazard identification, assessment, controls, training, evaluation), and the return-on-investment analysis that justifies ergonomic interventions. All training is delivered 100 percent online through Microsoft Teams and the American Institute of Safety Professionals LMS. Upon completion, graduates receive a certificate, wallet card, and transcript, employer-verifiable at amiosp.com/student-verifications.
Learning Outcomes
Upon completing this program, participants will be able to:
- Identify the six primary ergonomic risk factors: force (lifting, gripping, pushing), posture (bending, reaching, twisting), repetition (same motion repeated frequently), contact stress (hard edges pressing against tissue), vibration (hand-arm and whole-body), and static position (sustained posture without movement).
- Assess workstation ergonomics for office, manufacturing, and laboratory environments: monitor height and distance, chair adjustment, keyboard/mouse positioning, work surface height, tool presentation, and the workstation design principles that accommodate the 5th to 95th percentile worker population.
- Apply the NIOSH Lifting Equation at awareness level: recommended weight limit, lifting index, the six multiplier factors (horizontal, vertical, distance, asymmetry, frequency, coupling), and how the equation determines whether a manual lifting task poses acceptable risk.
- Apply ergonomic assessment tools: RULA (Rapid Upper Limb Assessment), REBA (Rapid Entire Body Assessment), Strain Index (upper extremity repetitive tasks), and the selection criteria for choosing the right assessment tool for each task.
- Design ergonomic controls using the hierarchy: engineering controls (adjustable workstations, mechanical lifting aids, tool redesign, anti-vibration), administrative controls (job rotation, micro-breaks, task variety), and the control selection that addresses the specific risk factor identified in assessment.
- Design and manage an ergonomic programme: management commitment, worker involvement in hazard identification, systematic assessment, control implementation, training, programme evaluation, and the continuous improvement that reduces MSD incidence over time.

- Introduction to Industrial Hygiene (includes ergonomics as one hazard category)
- International Diploma in Industrial Safety Management (ergonomics at diploma depth)
Why Choose American Institute of Safety Professionals's Qualifications
- #1 Injury Category: addresses musculoskeletal disorders (MSDs), which account for approximately one-third of all workers’ compensation claims. The course targets the largest injury category in general industry by focusing on prevention strategies that reduce ergonomic risk factors across a wide range of workplace tasks and environments.
- Assessment Tools at Practical Depth: covers validated ergonomic risk assessment methods including RULA (Rapid Upper Limb Assessment), REBA (Rapid Entire Body Assessment), Strain Index, and the NIOSH Lifting Equation. These tools enable learners to quantify ergonomic risk, evaluate task demands, and justify appropriate engineering or administrative controls.
- Programme Design, Not Just Awareness: focuses on building a complete ergonomics programme rather than providing basic awareness. It includes management commitment, employee involvement, hazard identification and assessment, control implementation, training, and programme evaluation to ensure sustained reduction in ergonomic injuries.
- 100% Online, Flexible, Recognised Across 42 Countries: fully online delivery with employer-verifiable certification available at amiosp.com/student-verifications, supporting global recognition and professional validation.

Career Opportunities
- Safety Officer — ergonomic assessment and MSD prevention is the highest-volume injury reduction opportunity in general industry. This course provides the assessment and programme design competency.
- Occupational Health — MSD prevention through ergonomic programme management reduces the most expensive category of workers’ compensation claims.
Frequently Asked Questions (FAQs)
This training program is intended to provide entry-level general industry workers information about their rights, employer responsibilities, and how to file a complaint as well as how to identify, abate, avoid and prevent job related hazards on a job site. The training covers a variety of general industry safety and health hazards which a worker may encounter at a work site. Training should emphasize hazard identification, avoidance, control and prevention, not OSHA standards.
