Course Overview
The Managing Safely for Directors and Leadership course from the American Institute of Safety Professionals provides an extended programme for directors and senior leaders who want deeper safety governance competency than the Leading Safely for Directors course provides. While Leading Safely introduces the director’s governance role, this extended programme develops the strategic safety management competency for senior leaders who actively shape organisational safety direction: integrating safety into business strategy, managing safety across multi-site operations, governing safety through mergers and acquisitions, managing regulatory relationships strategically, and building the safety culture that sustains performance through leadership transitions and organisational change.
The curriculum covers advanced legal framework (prosecution case studies, sentencing guidelines, director disqualification), safety governance structures (board safety committees, safety KPI dashboards, management reporting frameworks), strategic risk oversight (enterprise risk management integration, risk appetite definition, bow-tie for senior leaders), multi-site and multi-national safety governance, M&A safety due diligence, regulatory relationship management, crisis and reputation management, safety culture assessment and transformation, succession planning for safety leadership, and the board-level safety governance charter. All training is delivered 100 percent online through the American Institute of Safety Professionals LMS. Upon completion, graduates receive a certificate, wallet card, and transcript, employer-verifiable at amiosp.com/student-verifications.
Learning Outcomes
Upon completing this program, participants will be able to:
- Integrate safety into business strategy: aligning safety objectives with business objectives, incorporating safety into strategic planning, and the business case for safety investment that resonates with boards and investors.
- Govern safety across multi-site operations: standardisation versus local adaptation, regional safety governance, performance benchmarking across sites, and the governance structure that maintains standards while allowing operational flexibility.
- Manage regulatory relationships: proactive engagement with regulators, VPP and voluntary programmes, responding to enforcement actions, and the strategic approach to regulation that builds trust rather than adversarial relationships.
- Assess and transform safety culture: culture assessment methodologies, maturity models, transformation planning, and the sustained leadership commitment that moves culture from reactive to generative.
