The Trench and Excavation Safety course from the American Institute of Safety Professionals provides dedicated, in-depth training on OSHA 29 CFR 1926 Subpart P (Excavations), the standard that prevents trench cave-in fatalities. While the Focus Four Caught-In/Between course covers excavation cave-in as one of several caught-in hazards, this dedicated course provides the comprehensive Subpart P competency that excavation competent persons, supervisors, and safety officers need: soil classification methodology, all four protective system types with tabulated data, competent person duties in detail, access/egress requirements, water accumulation management, and the inspection programme that prevents the cave-in fatalities that continue to kill construction workers every year despite being entirely preventable.
Trench cave-in is the most predictable and most preventable cause of construction fatalities. A cubic yard of soil weighs approximately 3,000 pounds. A trench wall collapse buries workers under thousands of pounds of earth with virtually zero survival time. Every trench fatality follows the same pattern: unprotected trench, no competent person inspection, no protective system, and a wall that failed as soil physics predicted it would. This course teaches the soil science, protective engineering, and inspection discipline that breaks that pattern.
The curriculum covers excavation hazards (cave-in, falling into excavations, falling materials, hazardous atmospheres, water accumulation, utility strikes), soil classification per Subpart P Appendix A (Type A, B, C, stable rock, visual and manual tests, layered soils), protective system selection per Appendices B–E (sloping/benching, timber shoring, aluminium hydraulic shoring, trench shields), competent person requirements (daily and event-triggered inspections, soil classification authority, worker removal authority), access/egress (§1926.651(c)(2): ladder, ramp, or stairway within 25 feet of lateral travel), utility location (811/One-Call, hand digging tolerance zones), water accumulation management, fall protection at excavation edges, and the excavation permit system. All training is delivered 100 percent online through Microsoft Teams and the American Institute of Safety Professionals LMS.

Learning Outcomes

Upon completing this program, participants will be able to:

  • Classify soil using visual and manual tests per Appendix A: thumb penetration, dry strength, plasticity, fissures, previously disturbed soil, layered systems, and the field classification that determines which protective system is required.
  • Select protective systems: sloping (Appendix B ratios: 3/4:1 Type A, 1:1 Type B, 1-1/2:1 Type C), benching (Type A only for single bench, step pattern), timber shoring (Appendix C), aluminium hydraulic shoring (Appendix D), and trench shields/shielding (Appendix E).
  • Execute competent person duties: inspect excavations daily before work begins and after every rainstorm, freeze/thaw, or other condition change, classify soil, evaluate protective system adequacy, and remove workers immediately when hazardous conditions are detected.
  • Ensure access/egress compliance: ladder, ramp, or stairway within 25 feet of lateral travel for all workers in excavations 4 feet or deeper, secured to prevent displacement, and extending 3 feet above the landing.
  • Manage utility protection: 811/One-Call notification before digging, utility locate and mark, hand digging within tolerance zones, and the excavation procedures near buried utilities.
  • Manage water accumulation: pumping, diversion, and the controls that prevent water from undermining trench walls and creating the saturated conditions that downgrade soil classification from Type A/B to Type C.

Examination
Candidates can take this exam through an assigned portal from the American Institute of Safety Professionals. A passing score is 70% or higher, and exam results are provided right after by email to the address provided. The exam is open-book, allowing candidates to validate their answers. Any candidates who do not pass have 1 month after their exam to go through the training materials and can take the exam 3 additional times.
