Course Overview
The Trench and Excavation Safety course offered by the American Institute of Safety Professionals teaches construction supervisors, safety professionals, and competent persons how to handle trench and excavation operations as per OSHA regulations (29 CFR 1926 Subpart P – Excavations). Course attendees learn to recognize, and safely control trench and excavation hazards such as cave-ins, hazardous atmospheres, and water accumulation and implement control measures. The employer’s responsibility to provide a safe work environment, and to ensure that trenches are designed and inspected by competent persons is slide emphasized along with the protective systems of sloping, shoring, shielding, and trench boxes. Practical training is provided in soil type evaluation, assessing trench depth, and recognizing vibration and weather conditions, as well as surrounding structures that may affect trench stability, and the adjacent structures. Access and egress, utility identification, and trench failure emergency procedures are also taught. Emphasis is placed on OSHA’s requirements of daily inspections, the use of personal protective equipment (PPE), and restricted access to authorized personnel only. The course is designed to ensure compliance and effective control over all activities on the trench. This course helps participants learn how to assess excavation sites, strategize on ways to identify and mitigate potential hazards, implement safe work practices, and foster safe work environments. All this results in preventing injuries and fatalities in trenches while complying with regulations, and supporting a safe, productive, and hazard-conscious construction setting.
