Course Overview

The Warehousing and Storage Safety course from the American Institute of Safety Professionals provides comprehensive training on the safety hazards and controls specific to warehouse, distribution centre, and storage facility operations. Warehouses present a concentrated combination of hazards: forklifts operating in enclosed spaces with pedestrian workers, heavy materials stored at height on racking systems that can collapse, loading dock operations where trucks and workers interact, manual material handling that causes the majority of warehouse injuries, fire hazards from stored materials, and hazardous material storage requiring compatibility and segregation management.

The curriculum covers warehouse hazard assessment, forklift safety in warehouse environments (pedestrian segregation, aisle management, speed control), racking system safety (load capacity, inspection, damage management, collapse prevention), loading dock operations (dock locks, wheel chocks, trailer securement, dock plates, pedestrian management), manual material handling (lifting techniques, mechanical aids, ergonomic layout), warehouse fire prevention (sprinkler system maintenance, aisle clearance, flammable storage, hot work), hazardous material storage (compatibility, segregation, ventilation, containment), pedestrian traffic management (designated walkways, crossing points, high-visibility), housekeeping (aisle clearance, spill response, product placement), and warehouse safety programme management. All training is delivered 100 percent online through the American Institute of Safety Professionals LMS. Upon completion, graduates receive a certificate, wallet card, and transcript, employer-verifiable at amiosp.com/student-verifications.

Learning Outcomes

Upon completing this program, participants will be able to:

  • Assess warehouse-specific hazards: forklift-pedestrian interaction, racking failure, dock operations, manual handling, fire, and the concentrated hazard environment that makes warehouses more dangerous than they appear.
  • Manage forklift safety in warehouse environments: pedestrian segregation (designated forklift and pedestrian zones), aisle management (one-way, speed limits, intersection mirrors), and the warehouse-specific forklift controls.
  • Manage racking system safety: understanding load ratings (per shelf and per bay), conducting racking inspections (upright, beam, connector, anchor damage), installing rack protection (column guards, end-of-aisle), and preventing the catastrophic racking collapse that can destroy entire storage areas.
  • Manage loading dock operations safely: dock locks to prevent trailer creep, wheel chocks, trailer securement verification before loading/unloading, dock plate safety, and the dock area management that prevents the falls and crush injuries dock operations produce.
  • Implement warehouse fire prevention: maintaining sprinkler clearance (18 inches below sprinkler deflectors), aisle clearance for fire department access, flammable material storage compliance, and the fire prevention programme for stored inventory environments.
  • Manage hazardous material storage: chemical compatibility, segregation requirements, ventilation, secondary containment, and the storage management that prevents fires, explosions, and chemical reactions.

Core Curriculum Topics

  • Warehouse Hazard Assessment: forklift, racking, dock, manual handling, fire, hazmat
  • Forklift Operations: pedestrian zones, aisle management, speed, intersections, charging areas
  • Racking Safety: load ratings, inspection, damage classification, protection, collapse prevention
  • Dock Operations: dock locks, wheel chocks, trailer securement, dock plates, fall prevention
  • Manual Handling: lifting techniques, mechanical aids, ergonomic layout, injury prevention
  • Fire Prevention: sprinkler clearance (18”), aisle access, flammable storage, hot work
  • Hazardous Material Storage: compatibility, segregation, ventilation, containment
  • Pedestrian Management: designated walkways, crossing points, high-visibility
  • Housekeeping: aisle clearance, spill response, product placement, trip prevention
  • Order Picking Safety: height access, overreaching, equipment, manual handling at height
  • Charging Areas: forklift battery charging, hydrogen ventilation, no smoking, eye wash
Mode of Delivery
Participants will receive online training through Microsoft Teams and LMS. Courses are offered by accredited broadcasters and backed by expert instruction and official study materials. All assessments are conducted online and successful participants are awarded certificates that are accepted internationally.

What You Will Get

Why Choose American Institute of Safety Professionals's Qualifications

  • Warehouse-Specific: developed exclusively for warehouse, distribution centre, and storage facility operations, addressing hazards and control measures unique to these environments. The course focuses on warehouse-specific risks such as forklift traffic, racking systems, loading docks, material handling, pedestrian interaction, and storage operations rather than adapting general industry safety concepts.
  • Racking Safety at Depth: provides detailed coverage of storage rack safety, including load capacity requirements, inspection procedures, damage identification and classification, maintenance practices, and prevention strategies. It addresses the potentially catastrophic consequences of racking system failures, a warehouse-specific hazard often overlooked in general safety training.
  • Dock Operations: focuses on loading dock safety, one of the highest-risk areas within warehouse operations. The course covers trailer movement hazards, dock plate safety, vehicle restraint systems, pedestrian protection, forklift-truck interaction, and safe loading and unloading procedures designed to prevent serious injuries and fatalities.

This training program is intended to provide entry-level general industry workers information about their rights, employer responsibilities, and how to file a complaint as well as how to identify, abate, avoid and prevent job related hazards on a job site. The training covers a variety of general industry safety and health hazards which a worker may encounter at a work site. Training should emphasize hazard identification, avoidance, control and prevention, not OSHA standards.
