H2S is colourless, heavier than air, flammable, and lethal at concentrations above 100 ppm — concentrations that can be reached in seconds when sour gas or contaminated water is encountered. At low concentrations H2S smells like rotten eggs, but at higher concentrations it paralyses the olfactory nerve, eliminating the only natural warning. Workers who 'can't smell anything' may be in the most dangerous situation of all.
The curriculum covers H2S properties (colourless, heavier than air, flammable, soluble in water, olfactory fatigue), health effects by concentration (0.01 ppm detection threshold through 1,000+ ppm instant death), OSHA exposure limits (ceiling 20 ppm, peak 50 ppm for 10 minutes), ACGIH TLV (1 ppm TWA, 5 ppm STEL), H2S sources (sour crude, natural gas, wastewater, decomposing organic matter, geothermal), detection (fixed gas monitors, portable detectors, wind socks, calibration), respiratory protection (SCBA for IDLH, SAR with escape bottle, APR limitations), rescue procedures (never enter without SCBA, rescue from upwind, buddy system), wind awareness (crosswind escape, upwind assembly), safe work planning for H2S areas, and the H2S contingency plan. - Recognise H2S health effects by concentration: 0.01–0.3 ppm (detection threshold), 2–5 ppm (headache/nausea after prolonged exposure), 20 ppm (OSHA ceiling), 50–100 ppm (serious eye/respiratory irritation, olfactory fatigue), 100–300 ppm (rapid unconsciousness, pulmonary oedema), 500–1,000+ ppm (immediate collapse, respiratory paralysis, death within minutes.
- Use H2S detection equipment: fixed gas monitor placement and alarm set points (10 ppm alarm, 15 ppm high alarm), portable personal monitors (bump testing, calibration), wind socks (wind direction awareness for escape route planning), and the detection that provides warning before human senses fail.
- Select and use respiratory protection for H2S: SCBA for IDLH atmospheres (≥100 ppm or unknown), SAR with 5-minute escape bottle, APR limitations (only below IDLH, only with appropriate cartridge, never for rescue), and the respiratory protection hierarchy for H2S.
- Execute H2S rescue safely: NEVER enter an H2S area without SCBA to rescue a downed worker, approach from upwind, remove victim to fresh air upwind, begin CPR if not breathing, and the rescue discipline that prevents rescuer fatalities.
