Learning Outcomes
Upon completing this program, participants will be able to:
- Conduct systematic scaffold inspections: established methodology (bottom-up: foundation first to guardrails last), consistent sequence, complete coverage of every component.
- Inspect each scaffold component: foundation (settlement, displacement, drainage), base (plate condition, screw jack, mudsill), verticals (plumb, damage, connection), bracing (presence, attachment, damage), ties (location, attachment, adequacy), platforms (completeness, gaps ≤1”, overhang 6–12”, condition), guardrails (42” top, mid-rail, toe board), and access (ladders, stairways, no climbing braces).
- Apply the scaffold tagging system: green (safe fully erected, inspected, all components in place), yellow (caution modified use with restrictions), red (unsafe do not use, deficiencies present, entry prohibited), and the tagging that communicates status to every worker.
- Document inspection findings: inspection date, inspector name, scaffold location, components inspected, deficiencies found, tag applied, corrective actions required, and the documentation that creates an auditable inspection history.
- Conduct event-triggered re-inspections: after rain, wind, snow, ice, impact from equipment, overloading, modification, or any event that could affect structural integrity.
- Exercise authority to prohibit use: red-tagging scaffolds with deficiencies, preventing worker access, and maintaining the prohibition until corrections are completed and re-inspection confirms safety.
